Southern Suburbs
About Southern Suburbs Blinds: Measured For The Half The Oaks Miss
Southern Suburbs Blinds measures, makes and fits window shading along the corridor from Wynberg through Plumstead and Diep River to Bergvliet and Meadowridge. Every blind is built to the sizes taken at your own openings, because along a stretch holding Victorian sashes, post-war steel frames and modern aluminium sliders on the same street, no other approach fits.
One corridor, three different windows
Ask ten people where the Southern Suburbs begin and end and you will get ten answers. Only one geographical fact is common to the whole stretch: it lies on the sheltered eastern flank of the Table Mountain chain, with the ridge between it and the open Atlantic weather. Everything else changes block by block. Rainfall rises steeply the closer a house sits to the Constantiaberg slope. The century-old oak avenues shade most ground-floor glass for much of the year and nothing above the gutter line. The south-easter finds the open ground and leaves the sheltered gardens alone.
And the windows have birth dates. A Wynberg cottage runs small, shallow, original sash and casement openings; a Plumstead or Diep River home from the forties and fifties carries a single-glazed steel frame with almost no reveal; a Bergvliet or Meadowridge Garden-City house tends toward a wide, plain opening on a single storey; and nearly every era has since had a large glazed room added behind it. Those are three measuring briefs on one corridor, and the useful question is never what people in the Southern Suburbs fit. It is how far from the slope you are, and what year your window is.
What we measure and fit
Twelve ways to answer a Southern Suburbs window. Inside: roller blinds in blockout, sunscreen and light-filtering fabric; day and night banded blinds; aluminium and timber venetians, the natural fit for a shallow period reveal; vertical and panel blinds for wide sliding doors; cellular honeycomb blinds, a genuine insulating buffer for the wet-winter months; concealed and recessed blinds for a renovated extension's ceiling; and skylight and shaped blinds in channels for loft conversions and gables. Outside, where the afternoon heat is: external venetian blinds, folding-arm awnings, zip screens and roller shutters. Motorised control and automation run across all of it, including the stairwell window nobody wants a ladder for.
Child-safe operation is standard. Cord and chain tensioners go on every corded install, and for a nursery or playroom our advice is cordless or motorised control so nothing hangs at child height at all. Fabric and slat samples come to the house and are held against your own glass in your own light, not chosen off a screen.
Where we work
Right across the corridor, with four pockets that each have their own window story: Wynberg, whose old village core of thatched cottages, Victorian villas and Regency detailing sits inside a formal City of Cape Town heritage overlay; Plumstead, the modest forties-and-fifties brick belt split by Main Road and the railway; Diep River, a quieter, more affordable cottage pocket on flatter ground with a lighter rain load; and Bergvliet and Meadowridge, tree-lined Garden-City family streets with wider single-storey glazing. If your street is not one of those four, get in touch anyway; the free in-home measure works the same way everywhere along the corridor.
How a job runs
You send the form or open the chat, telling us where you sit on the corridor, the era of the house and which windows are giving trouble, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange a free in-home measure. At the visit every opening is measured, the window era and the bracket decision worked out on the spot, whether that is a face fix onto a sash architrave, masonry above a steel frame or a recess fit in a deep Garden-City opening, and fabric, slat and control settled room by room against the light each elevation really gets.
A written quote follows with each window priced on its own line, so nothing gets added later and nothing has to be decided while we are standing in your lounge. Nothing is manufactured until you have accepted it. Then it is made to order and fitted by hand, the space left clean, and each blind run for you before we go so you know how it works. Where a heritage overlay or a sixty-year-old facade is involved, the consent question is raised at enquiry stage, before any product is proposed, because a lead time lost to a form nobody submitted is the most avoidable delay in this trade.
What we will not claim
We do not guess figures down a phone line; the quote is written after the measure, with the lead time confirmed in it. Our roller shutters are built to take sun, heat and glare on the outside of the glass, with a genuine blackout benefit for bedrooms, and they carry no security rating; a security-rated product is a separate quote. Nothing we write is a heritage ruling or a damp survey, which belong to Heritage Western Cape, the City of Cape Town and a suitably qualified professional. We keep the cellular blind's energy claim qualitative rather than inventing a figure nobody can verify against your house, and we will not sell fabric to cover a draughty frame or a moisture problem that needs fixing first.
Getting hold of us
Through the form or the chat on any page; those are the two routes, and a real consultant calls you back rather than a call-centre. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly, first to agree a time and then to bring fabric and slat samples to the house for the free in-home measure and a written per-window quote. What you send is used for one thing only, setting up that call-back and your measure, and is never shared or sold, in line with POPIA.
